The Food For Thought program began in the summer of 2007. Five students from Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula embarked upon tours of area farms and food processing facilities, listened to guest speakers and were provided with photography instruction from award-winning professional photographer, D. Bradley Muir.
The students were encouraged to think critically about how farming and food production impact other areas such as health, the environment, the economy and the community at large. The collection of photos reflects their own creative perspectives on these connections.

The Photographers
Anika Marthyman, Age 14
Anika lives with her family on a hobby farm in Brentwood Bay, where they raise a small herd of goats. Anika is originally from Greenwood, Nova Scotia and moved to the Victoria area when her father was posted here in the military. Anika joined the Food For Thought program in order to meet new people and learn about “various methods of agriculture in BC and their corresponding impact on our community.” Anika is also a member of BC 4-H.
Kate Lord, Age 16
Kate lives in Cordova Bay, between Sidney and Victoria. Kate has previous experience in photography and is currently taking photography in school. Her primary goal in this program was to hone her photographic skills and simultaneously learn more about agriculture. Kate is a BC 4-H member, participated in an Agri-Career Adventure on the mainland last spring, and works in a local grocery store in the fresh produce department. Kate was already quite knowledgeable about certain aspects of BC agriculture and has since learned more about agriculture on Vancouver Island.
Kieran Lanktree, Age 14
Kieran is from Sidney, where he has lived for the past four years. Previously he lived in New Westminster and Vernon. His family actively supports local farms by buying directly from the farm. Kieran entered the Food For Thought program to learn more about the farms his family buys from and about the farms in his community that were previously unknown to him.
Princess LaFayette, Age 15
Princess grew up in West Saanich. Prior to the summer of 2007, she had never been on a farm before and was eager for the opportunity to learn more about agriculture through the field trips. In her application, Princess stressed the economic role of agriculture in BC and the lack of awareness of many as to the importance of agriculture to their daily lives. Princess is also an avid photographer and has honed her skills through this program.
Rebecca Sigurdson, Age 13
Rebecca lives in suburban Gordon Head. She is familiar with issues surrounding BC agriculture and its vital role in the economy, as her mother works for the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands. Through the Food For Thought program, Rebecca has learned more about photography and farming from experienced professionals.
