Bovine Embryo Sexing
Development of an On-Farm, Reliable Embryo Freezing and Thawing Protocol for Biopsied Embryos; Cryopreservation of Bovine in Vitro Produced Biopsied and Sexed Embryos (A0132/A0341)

Valuable female calves can be produced at reduced cost thanks to innovative research by the Abbotsford Veterinary Clinic, which combines embryo sexing and freezing technology.

Reduced Antibiotics for Broiler Chickens
Prevention of NE in Broiler Chickens by Application of Lysozyme Antimicrobial Mixtures in Poultry Feeds (A0430)

In order to reduce the use of antibiotics, this project completed lab and field trials of various lysozyme antimicrobial mixtures to determine what is most effective at preventing necrotic enteritis, an industry-damaging domestic avian disease.

Scrapie-Free Sheep
BC Purebred Sheep Genotyping Project (A0443)

By genotyping more than 2,000 sheep, researchers and breeders are now able to develop strategies to enhance flocks’ resistance to scrapie, a fatal disease of which resistance is carried in a specific gene.

Early Prediction of Lameness in Dairy Cows (A0484)

A study to identify changes in feeding or resting behaviour during the cow’s transition period in order to determine the causes of hoof and leg injuries and improve treatment methods.

Weevils Protect Cattle
Farming Weeds and Insects: Exploring New Methods for Mass-producing Weed Biocontrol Agents for Hound’s-Tongue (A0387)

A project to determine the feasibility of developing a cost-effective method of “farming” weevils as a biocontrol agent to control hound’s-tongue, a weed that is toxic to cattle.

Preparing for Future Emergencies
Development and Testing of a Template for Emergency Mass Carcass Disposal (LWT018)

A project to create and test a template for local governments across the province to use when planning for emergency mass carcass disposal in the event of disease outbreak or natural disaster, helping the industry bounce back faster and lessening public health threats and other negative social impacts. Funded through the $5 million Livestock Waste Tissue Initiative.

Drink Up: Better BC Milk
Implementation of Canadian Quality Milk Program in BC (A0385)

This project enabled BC daily producers to partake in the Canadian Quality Milk Program, which provided educational materials and training to improve efficiency and quality of milk, increasing stability of both domestic and international markets.

Plant Industries

Adapting Technology on Haida Gwaii
Innovation via Adaptation of Vacuum Microwave Dehydration Technology to Create Value-Added Wild Mushroom Production (A0580)

Wild chanterelle mushrooms abound on the Queen Charlotte Islands and the Haida Gwaii Culinary Co-operative anticipates good market potential for a unique dried mushroom product created using existing technology. The co-operative's dehydrator was not initially capable of drying enough mushrooms for a commercially viable business. This project enabled the co-operative .to adapt the technology to increase production and product quality.

Guiding Landscape & Nursery Marketing
Increasing Effectiveness of BC Shows to Promote Awareness of BC’s Garden Industry Products & Services / Measuring Awareness of BC’s Garden Image and Affiliated Entities (SP056/SP057)

In order to market its members' products and services more effectively the BC Landscape & Nursery Association developed a tradeshow strategy and schedule. The group also established an informational baseline on public awareness, attitudes and buying behaviours so that changing opinions could be monitored through the future.

Blueberry Disease Research
Investigation of Blueberry Scorch Virus and Other Virus-like Threats Affecting Highbush Blueberry in BC (A0476)

The BC Blueberry Council undertook research to determine the impact of blueberry virus strains affecting BC production in order to develop new and improved disease detection and management strategies for growers.

Sustainable Pest Control
Integrated Pest Management in Canola: Taking IPM to the Farm Gate (W0001) / IPM for the Control of Lygus Bugs in Canola (A0144)

These projects each reflect a specific issue in a larger Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy: the first project looked at preventative practices for IPM using biological, cultural and chemical tools; the second focused on the control of a specific pest called the Lygus bug by developing a monitoring and treatment program for improving fescue seed production.

Wasps Battle Worms to Save Cranberries
Implementing Biological Control of Blackheaded Fireworm on Cranberries in BC (A0128)

Rather than using pesticides, the BC Cranberry Growers Association developed a control option for Blackheaded Fireworm, a major cranberry pest, using a native wasp species as a biocontrol.

Preventing the Spread of Sudden Oak Death

A Viable Nursery Industry Attempting to Adapt to P. ramorum (A0469)

This project helped the development and implementation of a three-year action plan to prevent the spread of sudden oak death, a disease that has caused widespread damage to trees and shrubs in the Pacific Northwest.

Greenhouse Vegetables Get a Lift

Growing Agri-tourism

The North Cariboo Agricultural Marketing Association (FARMED) created a farm tour brochure for the North Cariboo region, featuring 12 local agri-tourism operations, event listings and more. FARMED also developed a website featuring their members and organized an educational circle farm tour in the region.

Local Agricultural Planning
Salt Spring Island Area Farm Plan / District of Lake Country Community Agriculture Plan (B0016.11/B0016.12)

Salt Spring Island and Lake Country recently completed community agriculture plans. Salt Spring Island's plan aims to re-establish agriculture as a social, economic and cultural priority on the island. Lake Country's plan will help strengthen core agriculture activities, encourage diversification and facilitate land-use decision-making.

Bringing Agriculture to Students
The Next Five Years: Directions in BC Agricultural Education K-12 (A0467)

This project created a strategic plan for the Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation, a non-profit group that offers quality classroom resources for teachers from kindergarten to Grade 12 to increase students’ awareness of the BC agri-food sector.

Turning Waste into Energy
Biogas Upgrading in British Columbia (SP090)

Building off a 2007 study that examined the potential of establishing an anaerobic digester facility in the Fraser Valley, this study looked at the technical and economic feasibility of upgrading biogas to renewable natural gas for injection into the natural gas grid.

Conscious Cities: The Natural Capital Project (W0067)

The Natural Capital Project examined the relationship between the economy and the environment, recognizing the vital role that natural capital plays in economic prosperity. The ACAAF-funded third phase of the project examined international land stewardship policy options specifically for the Canadian agricultural sector.

Curbing Wildlife Damage
Area-wide IPM Education for Blueberry Growers (A0497)

In the Agriculture Environment Partnership Initiative, several projects prevent wildlife such as deer, ducks, or swans from snacking on BC farmers’ crops and profits. This specific project helps blueberry growers use audible devices and visual techniques to protect their crops from starlings, crows and songbirds.
